Current Exhibit

Easy Does It, an exhibit by artist Edie Overturf, will be featured in the Â鶹Çø Gallery in the Miller Fine Arts Center at Â鶹Çø from Sept. 2 through Oct. 1, 2026. The exhibit will open on Wednesday, Sept. 2 with an artist reception from 5 to 6 p.m. Light refreshments and wine will be provided. The artist will then present a slide lecture at 6 p.m. in Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian Bull Music Center. This exhibition features relief printmaking, screen printing, sculpture and artist books.

Overturf shares the following thoughts regarding her exhibition:

“The relationship of text and image is an essential connection I use to construct meaning in my work. My work presents exaggerated portraits of contemporary anxieties, those that are biproducts of deeply rooted inequities in our culture. One facet of this is the impact on the individual — uncertainty, inequities, long standing political and social concerns that are inflamed by late–stage capitalism. These are shared experiences that the viewer may recognize, as we are all impacted. In a more granular sense and within the context of this shared (albeit often isolated) suffering, I am often creating what I call “landscapes of endurance.” This landscape could be literal in its structure in the work, or it could be used in the cultural sense (e.g. economic landscape, surviving despite the patriarchy). We are all enduring. This endurance is often intersectional, but capitalism and patriarchal norms are ever present layers on top of all the other suffering existing, often irritating those wounds. I’m aware that the content I create is mirroring ugly parts of this world, and heavy feelings. I don’t want to create anything that can add to that heaviness but rather impart to a viewer that they are not suffering under a bell jar. The delivery of my content often includes the tension of joyful aesthetics paired with implied gravity. This dichotomy creates a playfulness, a “spoonful of sugar” for digesting the content.

“Easy does it” is often said to encourage someone to move gently to prevent further injury, when trying not to drop something or to encourage calmness. These words can often be said TO a person who is justifiably irate and said BY someone that would benefit from the other letting it go. In “Easy Does It,” I have ventured further into the iconography of modern–day death and mourning using the tombstone as a delivery mechanism for irony and satire. A “facade” of mourning is the focus for completely synthetic displays of dismay and grieving. This facade is pointed towards elements of our patriarchal society that will NOT be missed if they could only just die off.”

About the artist:

Edie Overturf is a printmaking–focused artist living in Portland, Oregon. Overturf is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Jerome Emerging Artist Fellowship, two Minnesota State Arts Board grants, the Larry Sommers Fellowship from Seattle Print Arts, and the Waddell Printmaker of the Year 2023 award from Whitney Center for the Arts and Regional Arts and Council 3C grant. She has participated in several residencies, including those at Kala Art Institute, InCahoots Residency, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Connecticut and Mancos Commons Press. Edie is the co–creator of NewsPrint Podcast and Printmakers of Wrestling. She is an active member in many printmaking organizations, including Printmakers of Portland, Rocky Mountain Print Alliance, and Radical Intersectional Printmakers Guild. Overturf teaches printmaking, digital arts, comics and book arts at Mt. Hood Community College.

Directions:

The gallery is located in the James F. Miller Fine Arts Center on the Â鶹Çø campus. To reach the gallery from 99W, turn east on Keck Drive at the McMinnville Market Center (Albertsons) in south McMinnville. Turn right at the first street onto Library Court. The gallery is located in the second building on the left, Building B. Parking is available on the street and in the lot west of Nicholson Library.
