In Global Languages and Cultural Studies (GLCS), you can pursue a major, minor or certificate in Spanish (including an advanced certificate in medical Spanish), as well as a minor or certificate in Global French. You can also complete the Latinx Studies minor, which focuses on the histories, cultures, and social contexts of Latin America and Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.
Through small classes, close faculty mentorship, experiential learning that emphasizes global experiences, and externally recognized linguistic (OPI), and intercultural assessments (IDI), you develop strong language skills and cultural competence in preparation for success in graduate programs, licensure exams, and the workplace.
- Spanish: Major, minor, or certificate (including an Advanced Certificate in Medical Spanish). The department also offers a Latinx Studies minor focused on the histories, cultures, and social contexts of Latin America and Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.
- Global French: Minor or certificate, exploring the language and diverse cultures of French-speaking communities across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, with opportunities to engage global perspectives through interdisciplinary study and cultural immersion.
What you can expect
With an average class ratio of 1:13, you will benefit from individualized instruction where faculty know your name, true engagement, and strong faculty mentorship that help you succeed. With sustained support, you will build proficiency and intercultural competencies. You will graduate with recognized credentials in the workplace such as the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI), the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), and/ or STAMP 4S.
GLCS students study abroad in Ecuador, France, and Spain for a semester or a full year. You will live with a host family, take classes at local universities, and may complete internships with community organizations. Faculty here and abroad provide mentorship throughout the experience.
Practice your language of study with Language Teaching Assistants from Spain and France who live on campus and are fully integrated into our classes and programs. Teaching Assistants lead immersive activities that connect you with native speakers and provide personalized support for developing real world communication skills. Learn about unique features of their cultures through club activities and cultural events.

GLCS students graduate with strong language skills, cultural understanding, and real-world experience that prepare them for careers in healthcare, education, business, government service, international relations, nonprofit work, and global industries. The program offers flexible pathways in Spanish and French, including options for students who study abroad and those who complete their degree on campus. Students can take courses such as Spanish for the Health Professions, develop proficiency aligned with ACTFL standards, and receive structured support before, during, and after study abroad.
